CO2 and weight-based penalty: how do the environmental penalty apply?
As of 1 January 2022, the penalty on CO2 is changing and is being supplemented by a weight-based penalty. Some explanations!
The CO2 penalty
As of January 1, 2022, the threshold for the CO2 penalty has been raised from 133g/km to 128g/km, so new vehicles are affected. In concrete terms, this has a direct impact on its cost, which increases from €30,000 to €40,000.
The weight penalty is added
A new tax has been introduced at the beginning of the new year, and it concerns the weight of vehicles. This penalty applies to vehicles weighing more than 1.8 tonnes and is intended to keep SUVs, estate cars and saloon cars out of the public space and cause greater damage in the event of an accident. Many vehicle models are therefore affected, such as the X5, X6, X7 and 5 Series at BMW, or the Q7, SQ5 and A6 at Audi. The weight will be displayed on the vehicle registration document, which will indicate a category G. The calculation of the penalty is simple: 10€/kg from 1.8 tonnes. Please note that this penalty only applies to vehicles produced from 2022 onwards. As with the C02 penalty, you are exempt from 10% of the price per year. For example, in 2025, 30% of the penalty will be removed for a vehicle produced in 2022.
Who is exempt from the weight penalty?
Several exemption criteria have been included to avoid the application of the weight penalty. _if you have a disability card _if your vehicle is electric, hydrogen or hybrid with a range of at least 50 km _ if it is a commercial vehicle You also benefit from a considerable reduction of the penalty if you have at least three dependent children: 200kg less per child will therefore be applied.
